This Saturday, July 9, the McGinley Square Partnership and the Jersey City Office of Innovation are hosting a street fair and community clean up event on Bergen Avenue between Duncan Avenue & Montgomery Street.

Volunteers meet at 10 am to work alongside the Department of Public Works, doing neighborhood spruce-up tasks including refreshing paint on pavement strips, placing planters and filling them with greenery, and more. According to a statement from city spokesperson Jennifer Morrill, bike racks and trash receptacles will also be added during this time.

In addition to the service work, volunteers and neighbors citywide are invited to participate in the festivities that run from 11 am – 3 pm. Musical entertainment begins with LCCS middle school band The Pedestrians (11 am), followed by Country Blues Wonders (noon) and the infamous Dancing Tony keeps the party going from 1-3 pm. Build A Better Block festival-goes will also be able to witness a live mural painting by Lawrence Ciarallo during the event.

“The goal is to raise community awareness and help bolster business for local merchants,” says Harry Street Coffee Shop owner Ed Ramirez. “We also hope to showcase artisans from other districts who may be looking to become a part of the neighborhood or support it.”

In case of rain, the McGinley Square “Build a Better Block” Festival will be held July 10.
