As we all know, the New Jersey state government had a partial shutdown this weekend because of a budget impasse closing state run offices, courts, parks and beaches. Governor Christie and state lawmakers reached an agreement late yesterday and the budget was passed. Today all state run beaches and parks, including Liberty State Park, will be open for the July 4th holiday. All other state run agencies will be open as usual tomorrow.

With the chance of Liberty State Park being closed for the 4th of July Mayor Fulop announced over the weekend that the Jersey City Freedom and Fireworks celebration would be moved to Exchange Place. Mayor Fulop stated, “Here in Jersey City, we will not let inaction in Trenton cancel a celebration that brings together families from throughout our city and region. Therefore, we are relocating our celebration to Exchange Place. Our residents and visitors deserve the best 4th of July celebration possible, regardless of the inability for our state lawmakers to act.”

The Jersey City Freedom & Fireworks Festival will be held today, Tuesday, July 4, from 12 (noon) to 10 pm at at Exchange Place. The event is free and open to the public.

Celebrate our nation’s freedom with fireworks dazzling the sky over the New York City Harbor which serves as a stunning backdrop as you celebrate Independence Day with entertainment, a smorgasbord of food, an expanded beer garden, carnival rides, and a grand finale of breathtaking fireworks visible from both sides of the Hudson River.

The carnival area will be located at Columbus Ave. and Green Street. The main stage and  beer garden will be located at the Exchange Place plaza.

Among the multiple acts scheduled, viral sensation Tim Kubart will be performing his Grammy award-winning children’s music. Jersey City’s own Kool & the Gang will headline, with two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, 25 Top Ten R & B hits, nine Top Ten Pop hits, and 31 gold and platinum albums, the group has sold over 70 million albums worldwide and influenced the music of three generations. Kool & the Gang will take the stage at dusk just before the world famous Grucci family, puts on their nationally-recognized fireworks display. With the downloadable Grucci Fireworks app, attendees will be able to sync the music for the fireworks performance directly to their smart phone.

“We’re honored and delighted to once again work with the City of Jersey City to provide a fireworks extravaganza that will be a shared experience for a very wide audience,” said CEO and Creative Director Phil Grucci. “As the designer and choreographer of this event, the City of Jersey City will provide an unparalleled stage to celebrate America’s Independence.”

Be advised that any bags brought to the event are subject to search by law enforcement authorities. Attendees are encouraged to pack belongings in clear bags that show contents.

According to the event website the following items will not be allowed into the festival area:

Alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs
