Jersey City Farmer’s Markets

“Fresh (and delicious) food is very important to my family,” says Hunt Ethridge, manager for the Arlington Park Farmer’s Market. “I grew up in upstate NY where every farm had a stand next to the road. You’d drive up, pick up some veggies, plop some money in their lock box and head on home. The corn and tomatoes were to die for!  Now, I live in a food desert. It’s very difficult to access to fresh food. Having the market not only gives me, but all of my neighbors access to great vegetables and fruits.”

Ethridge, like so many Jersey City residents, believe in the importance of fresh and healthy food. “Fresh food is very important to the vitality of a community. There are many issues including food justice, healthy eating, community building and getting back to nature that are all helped by having access to fresh food.”

Dan Haag, chef and Jersey City Heights resident, attends the Riverview Farmer’s Market every Sunday. “Then with the produce, we cook a large vegetarian meal that evening. It’s one of the highlights of our weekend. It also helps teach our three year old where his food comes from, the different ways to prepare it, and how it it should be stored.”

Haag agrees with Ethridge on the importance of healthy food to the community. “Absolutely. Fresh food is vital to the community. It gives everyone an excuse to shop locally, eat better looking and tasting veggies and protein, see what’s going on in the community, and most importantly, it provides an opportunity to interact with neighbors in a friendly, vibrant, and beautiful environment.”
