Open Call for Poetry Submissions: Jersey City Independent and Jersey City Writers

April is National Poetry Month, a literary celebration dedicated to poetry’s vital place in our culture. ​Once again, Jersey City Independent and Jersey City Writers are holding an ​open call for poetry submissions​.

All forms of poetry are acceptable so send us your ballads, haikus or sonnets. Works submitted will be judged by Beth Achenbach (JCI), Jen DeGregorio (guest judge), and Sarah T. Jewell (JCW).

The top three submissions from the pool of Hudson County residents, will be published in April on the Jersey City Independent ​website and will be promoted on JCI‘s social media. All poetry submissions, including those from non-Hudson County residents, will be considered for inclusion in a Jersey City Writers poetry reading on the evening of April 13 at Art House Productions.

About the Judges:

Beth Achenbach is a Jersey City artist and poet. She works for Duggal Visual Solutions in NYC and part time as Creative Consultant and Photographer for Jersey City Independent. She is the founder of Ladies On The Mic and has been a featured performer at Art House Production’s Open Mic series, The Riverview Jazz Festival, POETRY U in Montclair, and Boob-A-Palooza at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park.

Jen DeGregorio teaches writing to undergraduates in New Jersey and New York. She received her MFA in Creative Writing from Hunter College (City University of New York). She co-curates the Cross Poetry Reading Series in Jersey City and edits the companion online literary magazine, Cross Review. Her poetry has appeared in The Baltimore Review, The Collagist, The Cossack Review, Day One (Amazon’s weekly lit mag), PANK, and elsewhere.

Sarah T. Jewell is a Jersey City Writers moderator and founder of the Jersey Plums Poetry Workshop. Her poetry was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2015 and has appeared in Jersey City Independent, Bird’s Thumb, and Halfway Down the Stairs.

Criteria for entry:

1) poet must be a Hudson County, NJ, resident for Jersey City Independent ​publication; for consideration ​in ​the​ Jersey City Writers poetry reading, there is no residency requirement 2) pieces should not be longer than 50 lines. Note: ​P​oems containing offensive material​ will not be accepted​.

Submission Guidelines:

– Poem should not be longer than 50 lines
– Cover page with title, author name, address, email and two sentence bio
– Remaining pages include page numbers and title
– Send attachments as .doc or .rtf
– Unpublished works only
– One submissions maximum per individual
